When you think of a humane society, what comes to mind……adoptions, strays, unwanted or lost pets? These are common activities which humane societies handle for a community. The Potsdam Humane Society (PHS) offers these services as well as many other valuable programs.
The programs offered at PHS come under three umbrellas: Community Outreach, Education, and Shelter Programs.
Under Community Outreach, PHS offers low-cost rabies vaccinations and microchip clinics, partners with North Country Children’s Museum to offer animal-themed children’s programs, conducts annual community events such as Strut Your Mutt Dog Walk & Craft Fair, Pets & Vets Golf Classic, photos with Santa at Potsdam Agway, adoption events at Tractor Supply Company, and more. PHS offers rental of the Chad Fuller facilities for birthday parties, meetings, and workshops.
Under Education, PHS staff and volunteers are available to go into the schools with a shelter animal to demonstrate and discuss the various shelter programs and teach about responsible pet ownership. Field trips can also be arranged for school children to visit the shelter to get a first-hand look at our facility. PHS offers workshops on Kitten Fostering and First Aid for Pets.
Under Shelter Programs, PHS offerings include Foster-to-Adopt which allows animals to be fostered out to approved adopters; SNIP (Spay-Neuter Intervention Program) which is an affordable low-cost feline spaying and neutering option for families who qualify; Pets & Vets which provides free adoptions for approved active duty or retired US service persons; and Seniors for Seniors which provides free adoptions of animals 7+ years old to adopters 60+ years old.
