Licensed Veterinary Technician
Job Description
The Licensed Veterinary Technician participates in animal intake, assessment, treatment, and adoption. The LVT ensures all vaccinations, medications, treatments, testing and behavior assessments are completed in a timely manner and maintains proper documentation. The LVT assists in preparation, monitoring, and aftercare of surgical patients. He/she prepares surgical packs, monitors anesthesia, and maintains an organized, hygienic work area. The LVT monitors food intake and provides afternoon meals to shelter dogs. He/she assists with socialization of animals, volunteer training, and other administrative duties as assigned. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to think on your feet, and to problem solve. The incumbent shall have the ability to multi-task and prioritize duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
Major
MEDICAL
- Administer morning and evening medications
- Daily treatments (vaccines and preventatives); be sure to start new puppies/kittens
- Physical exams
- Fecal exams
- Conduct daily rounds to assess animals’ health and needs
- Perform euthanasia when necessary
SURGICAL
- Clean tech and surgery room to prep for surgery
- Clean surgery drapes, prepare surgery packs
- Assist with preparation, monitoring, and surgical aftercare.
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Check all animal records for accuracy and completeness
- Enter all medical and treatment information in the database and animal files
INTAKE & INTERNAL TRANSFER
- Check Isolation for new animals; check for microchips; post on social media if no known owner
- Perform behavior assessments
- Move out all animals that are ready for adoption
Minor
- Ensure everyone has fully completed kennel cards
- End of the day close in all dogs and cats and lock all doors
- Answer phone
- Check dry erase board for notes from cleaning staff
- Refresh Nursery in afternoon (water, dry and wet food)
- Refresh water on all animals
- Provide afternoon meals for all dogs
- Spot clean kennels and cages
- Check status of foster care animals
- Socialize/ exercise animals
- Rabies/Microchip clinics
- Take sharps to hospital
Assist as needed:
- Put donations away
- Social media posts to promote animals and education
- Fundraising preparation and events
- Transport animals to and from vet
- Lead group /club tours
- Laundry
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program with a current New York State license as a Veterinary Technician.
Experience: At least one year of experience as a practicing Licensed Veterinary Technician with strong surgical and laboratory skills. Strong command of medications and solid mathematical skills.
Other: Knowledge of animal behavior and strong animal handling skills. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Ability to be registered as a euthanasia agent in the state of New York. Comfortable working with databases and spreadsheets.
